VLC for iOS is a free video player for iOS that lets you play a variety of film formats on your iDevice. With this app, you watch the movie formats your iDevice normally does not recognize.
From your desktop to your pocket
The app is basically the same as the desktop version of VLC Media Player. A large number of formats are supported, including MKV, AVI, DivX, WMV and more. VLC for iOS also supports subtitles and allows you to add this in SRT format on your videos. Font, size, and color are customizable.
VLC for iOS has just enough options regarding playback. In addition to the standard playback, it is possible to adjust the speed, brightness, contrast, and aspect ratio.
You can put movies and series in multiple ways on your iPad or iPhone. Sync with iTunes, download instantly, or use your Dropbox or Google Drive account to stream content from there. Streaming via UPnP servers or uploading files over WiFi is also supported.
Strangely it is not possible to play videos recorded with your iDevice on VLC.
The VLC for iOS interface is far from spectacular but does what it should do. The layout looks nice and the playback window is clear and free of unnecessary bells and whistles. The app now supports touch gestures and this allows you, if you’ve got it under control, enjoy your content faster.
Playback will generally be fine, especially if you are using popular formats. However, some formats are more difficult to play, especially with an older iDevice.
VLC for iOS lets you play many video formats in an easy way on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The program is not perfect, but if you watch a lot of movies and series in various formats, it is certainly a good option.
